Definitions used in lung volume recruitment (LVR) therapy
Term | Definition |
LVR counter | Device used to record LVR usage, incorporating pressure switches and a state data logger |
Maximum insufflation capacity (MIC) | The maximum, tolerable, externally assisted inflation capacity that is dependent on the person being able to hold their breath between successive insufflations (ie, adequate glottic closure) |
Lung insufflation capacity (LIC) | The maximum, tolerable, externally assisted inflation capacity that does not require the person to hold their breath |
Compression (insufflation) | A single squeeze of the LVR bag. The number of compressions required to reach LIC or MIC differs for each individual |
Repetition | One complete assisted inflation to LIC or MIC, typically achieved through a series of compressions (insufflations) |
Set | A series of repetitions performed sequentially |
Session | LVR therapy session quantified by duration (minutes) or by number of completed sets |
Dose | Number of prescribed sessions tailored to the individual |
