Definitions used in lung volume recruitment (LVR) therapy

TermDefinition
LVR counterDevice used to record LVR usage, incorporating pressure switches and a state data logger
Maximum insufflation capacity (MIC)The maximum, tolerable, externally assisted inflation capacity that is dependent on the person being able to hold their breath between successive insufflations (ie, adequate glottic closure)
Lung insufflation capacity (LIC)The maximum, tolerable, externally assisted inflation capacity that does not require the person to hold their breath
Compression (insufflation)A single squeeze of the LVR bag. The number of compressions required to reach LIC or MIC differs for each individual
RepetitionOne complete assisted inflation to LIC or MIC, typically achieved through a series of compressions (insufflations)
SetA series of repetitions performed sequentially
SessionLVR therapy session quantified by duration (minutes) or by number of completed sets
DoseNumber of prescribed sessions tailored to the individual
