Outcome | Measure | Description | Assessment time point(s)
Readmission to hospital | Hospital admission | Determined using hospital medical records and cross-checked with patient self-report via monthly telephone calls | 12 months | Primary outcome |
Exercise capacity | 1STS | A valid, reliable and responsive test to assess exercise capacity in people with COPD.51 The test will be conducted twice and the best result will be recorded. | Baseline End-intervention 12 months | Secondary outcomes |
Self-efficacy | PRAISE | A reliable and sensitive measure of self-efficacy for patients attending pulmonary rehabilitation.52 | Baseline End-intervention 12 months
Dyspnoea | mMRC | The mMRC provides a measure of functional breathlessness on a scale from 0 to 4, where 0 indicates no restriction to activities due to breathlessness and 4 the greatest impairment.53 | Baseline End-intervention 12 months
Anxiety/Depression | HADS | Anxiety and depression are common comorbidities in people with COPD and can be ameliorated with pulmonary rehabilitation,34 and will be evaluated using the HADS.54 | Baseline End-intervention 12 months
Health-related QoL | CRDQ | A disease-specific measure of health-related QoL.55 Is a valid measure of health-related QoL in people with COPD and responsive to change with pulmonary rehabilitation.56 | Baseline End-intervention 12 months
EQ-5D-5L | The EQ-5D-5L is a validated generic QoL measure which is used to estimate health benefits in terms of QALYs, and is recommended for economic analyses.57 | Baseline End-intervention 12 months
Physical activity | Accelerometry (Actigraph wGT3x-BT; Actigraph, Pensacola, FL 32502 USA) | Physical activity levels are an important measure of behaviour change following pulmonary rehabilitation. Using a hip-worn tri-axial accelerometer, validated for the assessment of free-living activity in people with COPD,58 data relating to time spent in different physical activity intensities and sedentary time will be collected and stored as raw acceleration in g units (m/s2). | Seven days of monitoring to accurately capture all activity intensities59 at: Baseline (immediately following hospital discharge) End intervention 12 months |
