Chronic cough however can last for over 8 weeks and is either a result of a number of respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) [3,4,5] or is idiopathic in origin, where sufferers can be triggered by normally innocuous stimuli leading to uncontrolled bouts of coughing [6]. This can severely impact quality of life [7].

Persistent cough of unexplained origin1 is a significant health issue that occurs in up to 5% to 10% of patients seeking medical assistance for a chronic cough2 and from 0% to 46% of patients referred to specialty cough clinics.3-6 Patients with unexplained chronic cough (UCC) experience significant impairments in quality of life.
